speed of DC motor

I read that the speed of the DC motor can be controlled by sensing the back EMF of the motor. But I know that current through the armature represents the torque not speed. And from 0 to rated motor speed torque supplied by the motor is same. Can somebody help me clear confusion.

what happens if we use motor in low speed

we want to use an ac motor in wide speed range 20-1450 rpm. we will decide to use siemens micromaster vector 440 driver.(is it right choose? ) is there any problem in low speeds (it will work in 20 rpm continiously 2-3 hours)

we have been trying to predict motor bearing failure by keeping a weekly record of the motor amps drawn on each phase.The motor in question is a three phase motor of abt 37 kW.In spite of constantly monitoring the amps,the motor failed abruptly.What could be the cause???
